Post Racial

During this campaign this term keeps rearing its ugly head. Barack Obama is supposedly a transformative figure in an America that believes that if you are black you should be grateful if a white smiles at you or is nice to you. Blacks should be grateful for an opportunity that is a right for a white. A black person should understand white confusion at his less than enthusiastic response to yet another white candidate. And simultaneously understand why they can’t quite figure out why blacks are not racist because they are excited about a candidate.

America seems to think that it is all behind us because it says so. One wise person quipped that blacks will let go of racism when racism lets go of them. That anonymous person understands that because Barack Obama is a candidate and because blacks, not just Michelle, are finally proud of their country, this doesn’t translate into a kumbya moment. And it is “Come By Here” for the record.

By the same token, the rationale in some quarters gleefully point to his non- slave heritage and white ancestry as the reason. He identifies black no matter how hard everyone tries to make him biracial, another questionable term. Waiting for the MSM to come up with new terms such as post quadroon, and post octoroon, etc. Maybe it somehow soothes the ruffled feathers of those who otherwise had lulled themselves into a false sense of security about their privilege.

Post racial being the misnomer that it is , is an insult to any thinking American.

It says in effect, get over it, we didn’t do it, although we reap the benefits still, daily, and you don’t.

You have nothing to complain about, see how much better things are now?

After all , look at the black representation on television and the colleges.

Why aren’t they satisfied? etc.

This ignores the very real institutionalized racism that is apparent and inherent from the public schools, job discrimination to the Katrina murders. It embraces the false claim of reverse discrimination and dismisses the disproportionate incarceration rate of black males to the overall population. It in effect says only some blacks who are uninformed still feel that way, the rest of us, the new black and white America have forgotten that old stuff.

Great subliminal attempt.

Post racial means the problem has been solved except in the minds of a few angry black folk who just simply can not move on and let go of the past. The MSM tries daily to force feed this idea, subtly. It would be laughable except it is readily palatable to those who have the choice of not dealing with the reality that racism still exists and a presumed post racial candidate or era is not on the horizon anytime soon .

It will not fix that which is broken and has been for hundreds of years. It exists in the minds of those who subconsciously need it to be over, because to deal with it, the fear becomes their dreams may be at the expense of blacks dreams. This is the perfect vehicle. Repeated enough hopefully it will come true. Sounds familiar.

It would be more useful to address the real concerns of blacks in America than smoothing over the iniquities and inequalities that exist, with new weak terminology. One man , a symbolic gesture and voila! All is well now.

It is amazing what the white masses are able to fool themselves with. Make no mistake, blacks are not fooled. They realize this is one more talking point to appease them, not solve the true disparity that still exists.

Solutions can only come with an honest dialogue and action, which most are anathema to even try or acknowledge.

Wonder where pre racial was? That part of American History must have been forgotten. Oh, Yes, it was before slavery.

Race was created to justify slavery.

So now Post Racial is born to bury the black diaspora even further and make sure it is one more nail in the coffin of genuine black culture as a source of pride.

A kind of watered down attempt at assimilation.

Again.

  1. The blacks will never be happy with what they have as long as its gave to them on a platter! Obama is having problems in Florida and I think we will see more of this as November draws near!

  2. “Race was created to justify slavery.”

As was gender, and all kinds of identification markers.

I find it remarkable that the Rwandan genocide transpired against a tribe of similar skin, but simply a different name.

One the one hand, naming, skin color, gender, give us an identity and tell us something about ourselves: My name is Kunta Kinte, and this is my story.

Or, my name Pecola and I have a story. It is the story of a girl, a little black girl. And the story has meaning because she is both black and female.

The same for the other such markers separate us.

With need both differentiation from the other and identification with the other.

I am not certain how this plays out in all political realms, a part of me is quite tired of trying to make sense of these things, and my comments aren’t entirely in keeping with your original post. But I do think that the “white masses ability to fool themselves” bodes well for this election.

As I wrote in response to one of your previous posts, a lot of people will show up in their liberal limos of privilege and detachment, be cool and hip and without prejudice, and vote for Obama. It is all about them . . . well, and a message of hope, too.

But they will for the most part remain completely ignorant of institutionalized racism, the prices still being exacted by building this country on the shoulders of slave labor (a burden much deeper than taxation without representation), but it will feel good to be liberal and putting all that ugliness behind us.

Meanwhile, Michelle and Oprah will be standing behind their man, making sure that he wins the day for “the greater good,” the excuse always given when some kind of oppression needs to be defended, and in this case, it is the dumbing down of Michelle . . .

because it is absolutely imperative that a black woman not be too smart for the masses.

There was, as a side note, a television special on the serial killer who shot Larry Flynt on Court TV (or whatever it is now called) this weekend. Turns out he shot Larry Flynt, because (God bless him) Flynt had the audacity to carry the first mixed race couples spread in pornography. While Hef was out pandering to the white monied mainstreams blonde hair and blue eyed buxom fixation, Flynt had the moxie to feature black men and white women together, as well as black women and white men. Imagine that.

Anyway, this mass murderer who was convicted of multiple racial killings and had fantasies of leasing a plane and dousing Chicago’s south side with lethal toxins to “kill hundreds and thousands of blacks” all at once, never once killed a black woman on his rampage. He actually did kill white women, the ones who slept with black men and threatened to contaminate “the race,” but never once did he even consider killing a black woman.

“Wasn’t worth it. Not worth my time.”

Well, there you have it. The most transparent articulation of who really is at the bottom of the food chain in this culture.

Out of a madman’s mouth, we see why Michelle and Oprah must stand behind their man “for the greater good.”

It’s about power. And since Western power (and most world power) was built by White men controlling everything, education, economics, and relegating the rest to various other groups to make their agenda work for them.

Importing labor from other countries. Making sure the little woman was pregnant and barefoot and reading the Bible.

As a woman, I will never be happy until I have the power due me handed to me on a silver platter.

    Not a chance.

Thank you for a very thoughtful and well written piece, one full of heart and honesty. Very appreciated.

Hopefully, somewhere in my rambling I’ve done justice to your comments while adding my own thoughts.

  3. Powerful post Blue. The Rwanda situation is easy to understand, Self hatred taught by those that hate.

“The most transparent articulation of who really is at the bottom of the food chain in this culture.”

So very true. Which is why race and gender are so intertwined. Not only did you do it justice you gave it clarity and validity, impressive. Thank you.
