The Dream That Won’t Die, Not This Time

Barack Obama gave an historic speech. He did it well. There was conviction in his voice, words and in his eyes. Composed and focused, His message was one of hope, clarity and honesty. He took a risk. It was time.

He meant what he said. He believes in the American Dream. He is the American Dream.

Americans do want change . He is the embodiment of it. We have a unique opportunity to move forward. As he spoke, there was a sense of hope and pride in his words.

He told of his former Pastor Wright’s generation, the ones who dealt with Jim Crow, inequality, and while he didn’t agree with what was said, but made a point, he could no more turn his back on him than he could his white Grandmother who has said racial epithets that made him cringe. He spoke of Slavery and the Constitution. He spoke about being an American. And what that means.

The anger is real. The resentment is real. A defining moment to be sure, because the point of the speech was to open up the dialogue not wish it away.

Black Anger. White Resentment. Both legitimate. A racial stalement. Reality.

Lesson. No one among us can lay claim to never having met or heard unfare or prejudicial or downright racist sentiments. This is afterall America. The question is what do we do about it?

Hagee holds a mock Slave sale at his church, not a word from the media. You remember him, he endorsed McCain? Somehow that is just as egregious as Wright’s words, if we were to be honest.

If

There are two standards in America. This man hasn’t let it affect him.

I can’t say that, can you?

He said, “Your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams. “

“We have a choice in this country.” We have to take responsibility. All of us.

He talked of the children and young adults, who inspire him. They are open to change. The ones excited about the future of our great country. They are the heirs to what we do now. This moment in history.
If we are truly to heal and come together as one nation, then listen again to what was said. It was the unvarnished truth. A More Perfect Union

America is not ready for Barack Obama, because he told the truth. Some will hear him, but it is easier to not hear him and continue. Continue because it would take introspection and action to hear his words and act on them. But, the dream keeps coming up. No matter what happens here, that dream just will not die.

It is a dream deeply rooted in the fiber of what makes this country great. We the people. All People.

In order to form a more perfect union.

That dream has motivated millions to become active in the political process. It won’t stop.

It won’t die.

Not this time.
