It is not news that McCain has embraced Pastor John Hagee. It is not even news that there has been absolutely no uproar in the media.
This is a man who thinks The Catholic Church conspired with the Nazis against the Jews, Katrina was God’s retribution for Homosexual sin, etc. You get the idea.
Why?
Well in America, Hagee is a demagogue. He epitomizes “good” Christian values, you know the ones, hating gays, Catholics, Jews, etc. Now what does this say about McCain? Well nothing actually, he is and always has been a card carrying member of the “Old Boy Network”. So of course the endorsement by one of his own brethren is a coup in his eyes.
While disavowing Cunningham and 527’s he embraces one of the most racist pastors to ever stand before a pulpit. He preaches divisiveness and hatred as some preach it , but wait, wasn’t Obama chastised for this? He disavowed Farrakhan and his racist remarks and distanced himself.
Not McCain.
Fear. It sells well in America.
So does Racism.
Let us not forget Hatred.
Judging from his lackluster and tired water-toting position, he needs a little fire.
Hagee can provide him with an explosion.
As it trickles in to the mass media, slowly, the firestorm that should surround it, won’t. The one thing that has been missing, oddly is the Fundamentalist Christian Movement weigh in, thus far.
Well it isn’t missing anymore.
For a moment we were lulled into a false sense of security that poor Fundamentalists, they were high- jacked into a political party without knowing the full ramifications of their support. This time it is much more insidious. As America Hopes and focuses on the upcoming primaries and all that that may entail, we are being treated to a non-Huckabee and the reconstructionist love-fest between McCain , who will” run a campaign of dignity”, and his supporter, The Racist.
It makes sense, of course.
Only in America.
Don’t sleep.
With Cunningham’s comments and Hagee’s endorsement, McCain has just about guaranteed himself the all-important redneck vote!

Interesting analysis, Zacca.
I’m not too familiar with Hagee, but I see in Wiki his congregation has over 19,000 active members. A mega church. I read recently that the megachurches do well because they develop thriving smaller communities within the large.
Community leads to connection and commitment.
Also to action.
Unfortunately, the liberals have no similar faith base to work from, driven as they are by diversity and not homogeneity.
It seems to me that the closest thing the liberal left has is Jim Wallis’ work with Sojourners. Every person interested in “faith, politics, and justice” should familiarize themselves with this organization. Bu they are an even handed and appeal to our better angels, a far cry from recent history.
Let’s hope that in the larger picture, we’ve had enough of this fear mongering and hate selling, and can move on to better things, and a discourse of hope and healing.

And Possibly the Presidency, Sparrow.

Blue,
I agree about the liberal base, it lacks homogeneity. Possibly to its detriment in elections, but to its credit in side stepping the obvious group-think and lockstep mentality that is the hallmark of that particular brand of ideology.
Will enjoy the link, Thanks.

Look at this from Brave New films. http://puddydunne.wordpress.com/
Does a man similar to George Bush in intelligence, having suffered the Hanoi Hilton and with a spiritual advisor in this film possible have an axe to grind?
God help us.
